City Gateway Women’s Project helps local women develop skills and confidence, increase independence and move into employment.

We run drop-in activities and courses in Poplar, Stepney and on the Isle of Dogs, offering study opportunities from ESOL to vocational courses and apprenticeships. Whatever your level we will match you up to the course that is right for you!

Our centres are friendly, busy places which welcome over 200 women each week – from a wide range of cultures and backgrounds. We also offer a free Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) service for women. You can expect to receive impartial and up-to-date advice in a friendly environment and support in overcoming any barriers to learning and progression that you might experience.

Keep Fit classes which are £1 a session  or If you take an ESOL course you will need to pay a small fee to register for the exam.

Administration

Business Admin Level 2 Apprenticeship
This intermediate level course is for learners wanting to work in the business sector. Apprentices spend four days a week on placement, and one day a week with City Gateway studying Business Admin NVQ Level 2, Maths Level 1, English Level 1 and ICT Level 1. Placements will typically be with a corporate business, a charity or a GP surgery, working in an administrative role. This Apprenticeship programme lasts for one year, with 20 days of annual leave, plus bank holidays.

Customer Service Level 1 with Beauty embedded
Get an accredited qualification in CS L1, and learn how to give beauty treatments. The course will give you an introduction to CS (health & safety, reception greeting and dealing with clients, creating a good impression) with Beauty elements such as hand massage, make-up and creating beauty products

Functional Skills ICT
Learn the basics of using your computer in 6-8 weeks. The course covers: using the internet, using Microsoft Word and sending emails. You can progress to higher levels of ICT use, leading to a GCSE equivalent qualification.

Functional Skills Maths
An opportunity to improve your Maths and apply it in your day-to-day life. You can progress to higher levels of Maths use, leading to a GCSE equivalent qualification.

Work Skills
This accredited 8-10 week programme is designed to give you the skills and knowledge you need to progress onto an Apprenticeship or alternative course or into work.

Our English courses are designed to help you grow in confidence and vocabulary to be able to get the most out of life. Whether you are looking for support with your literacy or to gain qualifications we can help you achieve. 

Practical English
A pre-entry English class for speakers of other languages. This course is aimed at those who struggle to read and write letters of the alphabet and short words.

Literacy Lunch
This is a weekly session to help speakers of other languages to improve their English. Students work with volunteers, one-to-one and in small groups, focusing on speaking skills.

English courses for speakers of other languages (ESOL)
Take one of our ESOL courses and improve your English. We offer Entry 1, Entry 2 and Entry 3.

Functional Skills English

This course gives you the opportunity to improve your written and spoken English, using situations you’ll find in day-to-day life. You can progress to higher levels of English use, leading to a GCSE equivalent qualification.
