For us volunteering is all about 'opportunity'.

It's an opportunity for trainees to spend time with people other than staff who can help them develop and grow.

It's an opportunity for volunteers to meet the often inspiring young people, women and families we work with day in, day out and helping them broaden their horizons.

It's an opportunity for individuals or corporate teams to connect with their local community and make a positive impact in it.

Volunteering with young people

Passionate volunteers help us to deliver youth programmes, act as learning mentors, expose young people to the corporate world, develop self-confidence and much more. We look for volunteers and  teams to work directly with our learners through employability programmes, developing the soft skills they need to thrive in employment through activities such as mock interviews, CV workshops and office tours.

Previous volunteers got involved with:

  • Employability sessions
  • Insight tours
  • Leading sessions on our training courses
  • Youth Work evenings
  • Music lessons and Studio work
  • Dance lessons

Whatever your skills or passions, you can get involved!

CV and Mock Interviews

Many women attending our centres are looking to get into work and support their families. Often this is the first time they have looked for a job.
Volunteers help these women through CV surgeries to help them build CVs that get them looked at and interview sessions to practise the skills needed to succeed at interview.

You don't have to be an expert in recruitment to help out. We are looking for volunteers who have a desire to help some of the most marginalised people in our society and help them to take the next step in gaining independence.

Literacy Lunch

City Gateway runs literacy lunch sessions at our Women's Project every Thursday. These sessions have been developed to help women in the local community learn and practise their English.

We are looking for female volunteers (due to the vulnerable nature of some of our female students), to join us at these sessions. Some volunteers commit to one session every 4-6 weeks but others choose to come more regularly. It’s up to you how often you choose to come!

A number of the Literacy Lunch students are on an English course at the Women’s Project and this additional English practice in small groups is crucial to their development of long-term literacy skills.

The role of our volunteers is to simply sit with a group of students (usually two to four women in the one hour session) and work through worksheets and speaking/listening tasks selected by our English tutor.
