Anita is from Slovakia and arrived in the UK in 2013, and although fluent multiple languages she could not speak English well. With an extensive work history working in both the childcare and IT she was confident she would find a job. However, the reality was very different; "it's difficult when you are new to the country".
The constant rejection Anita began to lose hope in gaining a job and felt disconnected from the working world. When she attended a job fair and a CGWP outreach worker suggested an alternative entry pathway Anita thought, "I’m 38; I’m too old for apprenticeships!"
Nonetheless she applied for an apprenticeship was invited to interview "it was exciting because it had been more than a year that I was looking for a job. It gave me confidence and encouragement."
Securing the apprenticeship placement further empowered Anita to continue her journey with CGWP and through her classroom interaction she developed connections with other learners with similar aspirations; "many ladies when they stay at home with children and are out of work for a long time they lose their hope to be employed by someone again".
Anita secured her NVQ Level 2, with her Maths level 1, English and ICT Level 2 during her apprenticeship; the support and encouragement at Women's Programmes integral to her connection to the wider community, "I've made some good friends from lots of different cultures and backgrounds."
Upon completing her apprenticeship, Anita secured a permanent role in the company, progressing to a role where she supervises and trains others and is an advocate for apprenticeships at any age; "I would recommend it to anyone who wants to get back to the job market and not to lose confidence and motivation".
In January 2016 Anita started her studies in part time Foundation Degree in Management at Birkbeck University of London. Anita is now concentrating on finishing her degree hopes to find a job in a business management role once she has completed her studies.
