From: Tower Hamlets
Programmes: Women's Voice, Personal Development Level 1, Customer Service
Progression: Public Speaking and Debating
Current Status: Preparing for work
Precious was referred to CGWP by her Tower Hamlets support worker; and enrolled in Women's Voice confidence, public speaking class, Personal Development Level 1 and volunteering for 2-4 hours per week with the reception team at Stepney Life Centre.
Initially staff were concerned for Precious, she would often appear nervous and hover at the edge of the classroom – but she was always on time and came every week, demonstrating a desire to connect and to learn. Gradually, and in the engaging environment of CGWP, Precious pushed herself beyond her comfort zone she became more open with her peers and tutors; "I got my confidence". She became to enjoy meeting people from other cultures, an engagement opportunity for learning and connection she did have before working with CGWP.
Precious also studied Personal Development Level 1, with a focus on learning to manage her own finances, reflective learning on her volunteering placement as well as speaking and listening skills. "The course made me feel young again ... I learnt about everything in modern life basic things like budgeting."
CGWP also supported Precious over the Autumn with some Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) and low level Safeguarding needs. The staff were able to equip her with the skills and confidence to take ownership of solutions to problems as did the skills learnt in the classroom, "Women's Voice ... has helped me to debate privately and publicly." Precious gained confidence from this holistic educational experience, "[it] helped me focus on my life more than usual."
