Having progressed from school with little in the way of qualifications, and no clear sense of vision, Karl didn't know what his next steps should be. The one thing he did know is that he had a passion for sport and was keen to explore "When I first started here I never had vision about what I wanted to do. People used to say to me 'What do you want to achieve?' I said – 'I don’t know to be honest, at the moment I just want a job and I really like sports'. When I got into Youth Work, I realised I want to work with young people."
He heard about the Limehouse Youth Centre from a friend and started coming along to play futsal. What started as a way of getting out of the house and keeping active, quickly became something much more. Karl discovered the courses offered by City Gateway where he could gain sporting qualifications and soon completed his Sports and Fitness Level 2. Following this, he was asked by City Gateway staff to help out in the gym and volunteer with young people as part of the Summer Programme.
This proved to be a huge step for Karl in realising how he could put his talents to use in a productive way. The Young Leaders Programme, as well as further professional qualifications through City Gateway, enabled Karl to develop his skills and realise his potential, as well as clarifying his direction for the future.
Limehouse Youth Centre helped to give a Karl a clear sense of where he could go; opening up opportunities that previously seemed closed. He now has a passion to see other young people realise their potential.
"When young people come in with challenging behaviour, we can recognise that they might be putting on a big front, but if we can develop them so that they can use this confidence in a positive way, we can help them become really good leaders."
